"I know that
the day will come when our kids will be grown and we will move to a
smaller home. We'll be able to take the painting with us wherever we go,
and so will never truly feel that we've given up our home."
My studio phone rang one
morning this past August. The caller introduced herself as Sue A. She had
learned about The Haunted Studio through the feature article that had
appeared that month in
Victorian Homes
Magazine. We chatted for a while, and shortly thereafter, I emailed the information she requested.
Here emailed response came
the following day:
Ours is a 6-year-old new
Victorian. I fell in love with your paintings and I'm a big Halloween
fan, so I thought a spooky painting of our house would be wonderful!
My husband just took the attached pictures of our house. So of course,
you're getting summer pictures instead of fall pictures, but they give
you a basic look at our house. I'd love to have my three sons in the
painting, maybe sitting on the steps.
Probably our two standard poodles, too, and I'm not sure about my
husband and myself. I'll look for pictures of everyone to send you, and
I'll get your deposit in the mail. I just wanted to get these pictures
off to you so you could get an idea of our house.
Sue was enthusiastic about
the first color study I sent, and suggested a few changes, particularly
to the family grouping: hair styles, clothing and such. Several revised
study paintings later, she let me know that everything was perfect.
This, the family decided, was to be a large painting, so I could really
pay attention to the tiny spindles around the porch, and even detail the
three boys' spooky t-shirts.
The painting left here in
its "bulletproof" crate on November 4, and on the 6th I received the
email I always eagerly (anxiously) await:

My husband and I just finished
unwrapping our new painting and admiring the beautiful outcome of
all your hard work. I am so happy to have this painting to
treasure and pass down as an heirloom-- I know that the day will
come when our kids will be grown and we will move to a smaller
home. We'll be able to take the painting with us wherever we go,
and so will never truly feel that we've given up our home.
Thank you so much for creating
this beautiful picture for us and for making sure every detail was
just so. Your talent will be much appreciated and admired for a
long time in my home!
