Night of the Chosen One

This painting grew out of a challenge I gave to my Halloweenist subscribers over a year ago: "Describe the painting that you'd like to see me create." Out of more than one hundred imaginative and intriguing verbal suggestions, I selected six which, I thought, I could visualize in paint, and invited subscribers to vote for a favorite. The clear winner was Jeneviève H's story, which read as follows:

An old, small country graveyard, un-kept, covered in mist and fog. Many small, broken and toppled tombstones all around. A rundown chapel off to the side, windows broken, covered in clinging ivy. In the middle of the graveyard, a small group of either young people, or even Witches standing around a small fire, arms outstretched to a full moon, with a large storm approaching from the rear. Around them, just out of reach of the light of the flames, the shapes and shadows of many spirits, maybe those who they call, maybe just curious residents of the graves. Maybe even a small child spirit having the courage to step just across into the edge of the light. Painted with many dark colors, except for the fiery orange, yellow & red of the flames, being the centre point.

With a few minor changes, and after a long, long period of gestation, Night of the Chosen One was born.

This is one of my larger paintings, and includes a great deal of detail you probably won't be able to see in the image above: ghosts and goblins, a black cat, and the child spirit Jeneviève so clearly described.
