"Things That Go Bump In The Basement"

Back in February, this year, I received an eMail from Dave W, who asked whether I had ever considered painting a scary basement. Matter of fact, I had not, but the idea intrigued me.  Our kids (now grown and with children of their own), to whom I mentioned the subject, agreed enthusiastically.  They told me that, as children, they too had been afraid of our basement, with its hulking machinery and appliances whirring and thundering at odd times, its cobwebbed, shadowed corners, its grim walls concealing dark cluttered spaces.

I asked Dave to describe the scary basement he remembered from his growing up years. And out of these recollections and my own, "Things That Go Bump In The Basement" rapidly developed.  All, that is, except for the title. Frankly, I was stumped for one with the right feeling.  I posted my pencil sketch on The Halloweenist, my monthly newsletter from The Haunted Studio, and invited FOTHS (Friends of The Haunted Studio) to submit title suggestions. I was inundated! The Ghoul Board (which makes such important decisions here) fought over the many great titles that were suggested, and finally agreed on this one.

People who receive The Halloweenist watched "Things That Go Bump In The Basement" develop from Dave's input, percolate through my imagination, final sketch, and finally to the painting you see here.
